Well, I finally purchased my equipment, and have been hitting the trail by my house in Willow Springs. Keep in mind, that I just moved here from Southern California, and, prior to that, I was born and raised in South Texas. Given these geographical handicaps, prior to the last two weeks, I had seen snow as many times as there are digits on my left hand. That would be five.
Sherman, my dog, is a mutt. I attained a DNA test on him a couple of months ago, and he includes German Short Haired Pointer, which I see is a breed of dog used in Scandinavian countries for guess what?.........skijoring! He weighs 103 lbs. by last account, and loves nothing more than running about in the snow.
What I have learned in the brief time that I have been trying the sport out is that he is a natural puller, BUT, we need training and discipline. He has seen deer twice and decided to chase! I can see this coming, and sometimes can refocus him, but at the very least, I can hit the deck before he pulls me off my feet. I am hoping we have more snow next Saturday if there is a meet, and will be joining to talk to those of you who have much more experience.
